Guide To La Cala de Mijas |
Overview
The village of La Cala de Mijas lies on the Costa del Sol approximately
25 minutes drive west from Malaga International Airport and has become
a hotspot for both tourism and for property hunters in recent years.
Although La Cala has maintained a level of real authentic Spanish
charm, it has in some ways also taken on the feel of being quite
international and cosmopolitan with many nationalities living side by
side.
Local Facilities
If you are planning to stay in La Cala either permanently or for a
holiday, you will find everything you need for day to day living
including supermarkets, banks, pharmacies, estate agents, hairdressers,
dentists, lawyers and doctors. The town hall or "Ayuntamiento" is also
situated within La Cala village and can be found just off the sea
front.
It's always great to be able to converse in Spanish with the local
community but if Spanish is not your forte you will find that in
many places you will be able to converse well in English. The local
town hall, banks, bars and restaurants all have English speak staff.
The new Costa del Sol hospital is no more than 15 minutes drive away
in the direction of Marbella via the N340 motorway which runs through
La Cala and provides access to the whole of the Costa del Sol. The
Costa del Sol hospital is a large and modern hospital that services
most of the coast which means that it has all facilities available
for almost any emergency.
If you are resident in Spain and pay into the Spanish social security
(Seguridad Social) then you are entitled to free healthcare in Spain or
if on holiday you will need your E-111 form or the new style EU
health card.
Another local service that is worth considering is the "Helicopteros
Sanitarios" which provide you with a call out doctor to your home and
also a hospital transfer service. Cover for a family for one year is
around €300 and provides extra protection. Another great aspect for
the Helicopteros Sanitarios is that all doctors are fluent in English.
Bars and Restaurants
Although La Cala is not a huge town, it does have an abundance of
restaurants, bars and café's. The restaurants in La Cala are able to
accommodate all tastes and nationalities including Italian, Chinese,
British and of course Spanish.
There are also ample café's and tapas bars where you can sample some
of the more authentic local tapas dishes which are not only extremely
tasty, but are also very reasonably priced.
You will find that most of the bars and restaurants are open until
very late especially in the summer months, when most people venture
out later at night due to the heat.
Sports and Leisure
In and around La Cala you will also find an abundance of quality sports
and recreation facilities. There are dive centres, gymnasiums and
virtually every outdoor activity within minutes of the village. The
lawn bowls centre at Miraflores and the tennis club "Club del Sol"
welcome everyone. Of course we should also mention the excellent golf
courses at La Cala Golf and Mijas Golf, Santana Golf and El Chaparral.
These are available to non-members, lessons are available and equipment
can be hired.
In the hills just behind La Cala you can enjoy horse riding. Although
if you simply enjoy a night of family entertainment watching the
horses why not try the "Hipodromo del Costa del Sol", which is
situated just on the outskirts of La Cala village.
If you fancy more of a chilled out day, why not take yourself down to
the beautiful long stretch of golden sands on the beach. The beaches
of the Costa del Sol are well cared for and very clean. When you
fancy a break from the sun you will find plenty of café-bars,
restaurants or Chiringuito's to cool off in and enjoy a nice long cool
drink or something to eat.
La Cala de Mijas simply has it all, but is also a short distance from
all the internationally famous names such as Marbella, Puerto Banus,
Fuengirola, Torremolinos and Benalmadena.
