beaches, wonderful temperate weather, and nightlife to rival Spain's
biggest cities, the Costa del Sol has something to offer every traveler.
Costa del Sol West and Costa del Sol East
The Costa de Sol is made up of 161 kilometers of coastline along Málaga
province in Southern Spain. When speaking about the Costa del Sol,
the coast is generally divided into two parts-- Costa del Sol West,
which runs west from Málaga city, and Costa del Sol East,
which stretches off to the east.
Costa del Sol West makes up two-thirds of all of Costa del Sol, and its
calm, sandy beaches have made it the perfect holiday destination. This
part of Costa del Sol is packed with overflowing beaches, great beachside
bars, and elegant resorts. Here, just west of Málaga city is the
infamous Torremolinos, which despite a less-than-shining reputation has
become a terrific resort town, full of great bars and beaches and is a favorite
with many Costa del Sol property hunters. All along this stretch of coast are great areas for snorkeling, diving, and
sailing. There are also some terrific golf courses all over the Costa del
Sol.
While the main tourist sites and activities in the Costa del Sol are
found on the western half of the coast, the Costa del Sol East has a
different, somewhat wilder kind of charm and is why it has become increasingly
popular with costa del sol property investors. This half of Costa del Sol
is about half the size of Costa del Sol West, and is lined by huge
cliffs (up to 200 meters high) where the Sierra Almijara mountains
meet the sea. Along this stretch of Costa del Sol are lots of large,
isolated coves-- some of which can be reached by car, others that
are accessibly only by paths.
Nerja
Eastern Costa del Sol is a great place to get away from the busy beaches
further west, but it's also a great tourist destination all its own--
the resort town of Nerja is located here, with 16 kilometers of
white-sand beaches and sparkling waters. Once a small fishing village,
Nerja has maintained a lot of its original character, though the town
is constantly growing. The center of town, in fact, remains
remarkably unchanged. Full of whitewashed homes with geranium-lined
windows, the narrow streets of Nerja still feel like the fishing
village it once was. Despite the undeniable charm of the city center,
the city's most remarkable feature is its famous Balcón de Europa
("Balcony of Europe"), a wide avenue that runs along a towering cliff.
Just three kilometers from Nerja's city center are the famous Nerja
Caves. Full of amazing geological features and ancient wall paintings,
these spectacular caves will excite both children and adults.
Completely open to the public, the Nerja Caves are home to an annual
dance and music festival in June.
Málaga City
The capital of Málaga province is Málaga city, and this terrific city
lies at the center of the Costa del Sol. Once overlooked in favor of
the area's many beaches, Málaga is quickly becoming a tourist
destination in its own right. The birthplace of the famous Pablo Ruiz
Picasso, Málaga city is now a cultural center devoted to the artist;
the Picasso Museum and the building in which Picasso was born, both in
the historic city center, draw thousands upon thousands of
visitors. Offering more than just history and culture, Málaga city
is also a great place to explore; made up of small streets and squares,
the atmospheric city center is wonderful for shopping, eating, or just
wandering around.
Marbella
Marbella is considered by many to be the St. Tropez of Spain and is home
to some of the most luxurious of Costa del Sol property. This
luxurious resort city's motto is "A Way of Life," and those who
reside in and visit Marbella seem to have taken this motto truly
to heart. This resort town is full of glamour and fame--
several Hollywood stars have property here, and the city is a favorite
filming location for movies. Just to the west of town is the Puerto
Banus, a symbol of a high-class, affluent lifestyle, where time is
spent lounging on yachts and sipping drinks. This is a great place to
spend some time soaking in the atmosphere and soaking up some cocktails
at one of the area's many open-air bars.
Fortunately, Marbella has another personality behind the sparkle of its
glamorous facade. Spending some time exploring the narrow streets in
the city's old town is enough to prove the city's individual
personality; here, shops and homes intermingle with wonderful
restaurants and tapas bars, giving the city a surprising "villiage-y"
feel that seems at odds with its glamorous reputation. Its easy to see why
Marbella is still one of the most popular choices for those looking to buy
